We focus on the impact that the harmony of spaces has on everyday life.
If you seek a sensory experience of your home - you’re in the right place. Our clients understand the impact that the harmony of spaces has on everyday life. By carefully designing the spaces, choosing the right materials and making skilful use of light - we create spaces that are conducive to relaxation and calm.
Our projects tend to fit in rather than stand out. New build homes belong to their context; infill projects complete the street, and contemporary renovations embrace the existing historic fabric.
We are interested in creating or altering buildings that are conceived to last and co-exist harmoniously within the world that they will inhabit -simplicity and quality that will age well and last long.
Over our 20 years of experience, we have learnt that clients often have strong conceptual ideas but don’t know how to translate them into physical spaces. We help you visualise exactly what you want by exploring and questioning what lies behind those ideas to identify the concerns that are relevant only to you.
To bring your ideas to life, we use building modelling software to create a virtual design and construction model your project. It enables us to test every aspect of construction before any time is invested on site. It helps reduce costs, waste and process inefficiencies by providing better insight into the sequencing of work, quantities of material and design decisions at an early stage.
Balance and context.
My approach to the work has always been shaped by my love for the ocean and surfing. I spent a lot of time in the open ocean, and it has taught me to appreciate balance within powerful natural forces. It continues to inform how I think about buildings and how they sit in harmony with their surroundings, responding carefully to context rather than imposing themselves on it.
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, where I developed an interest in water sports such as windsurfing and surfing. At the age of fifteen, I took part in a transatlantic yacht race from Cape Town to Montevideo, Uruguay, with an adult crew. Experiencing the vastness and wave energy created in the open ocean left a lasting impression and cemented my love of surfing.
During my teenage years, I couldn't find a career field that matched the pull of the ocean until I spent an afternoon in an architecture studio. The experience of working with elements such as light, wind direction and other forces had an immediate impact and ignited a lifelong passion for architecture.
After studying architecture at the University of Cape Town, with practical experience in Thailand and Hong Kong, I moved to London in 1998, where I completed my professional qualification at London Metropolitan University.
Before I set up the practice in 2007, I worked for Team Architecture in Cape Town; Denton Corker Marshall in Hong Kong and London; and Jamie Fobert Architects in London. At these practices, I learnt the value of ideas, the technical rigour required to put a building together and the importance of balance in spatial composition and the careful consideration of materials, light and form.
I live in north London with my Spanish partner and our two children. Surfing remains an integral part of my life, and I take every opportunity to return to the water, whether it be to train at the wave pool in Bristol or when we travel to the Spanish Atlantic coast, both north and south. Alongside this, I have developed a deep appreciation for Spanish gastronomy — particularly salt-dried tuna, best enjoyed with a chilled glass of manzanilla.
