Residential Architect in Crouch End, North London

Architecture and interior design for homes in Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Highgate and the surrounding area

Pierre Maré Architects is a RIBA-chartered residential practice based in Crouch End, North London. We work with homeowners across N8 and the surrounding neighbourhoods - Hornsey, Stroud Green, Muswell Hill, and Highgate - on extensions, loft conversions, new builds, refurbishments, and interior design projects.

We are located a few minutes from Crouch End Broadway. We know this part of London well - its streets, its housing stock, its planning context, and the particular character that makes it worth investing in. That local knowledge shapes how we approach every project we take on here.

Working in Crouch End and North London

The housing in this part of London is varied and characterful. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate many streets, alongside Edwardian semis, inter-war housing, and occasional post-war infill. These buildings are well built and well loved, but they were not designed for the way people live today. Most of our clients are looking to adapt what they have - to create more space, more light, and a better relationship between inside and outside - without losing the character that drew them here in the first place.

Extensions, loft conversions, and full refurbishments are the most common projects in this area. Each one involves a careful reading of the existing building - what it is, what it is trying to be, and what it can reasonably become. The best outcomes come from working with the building rather than against it.

Planning and conservation areas

Crouch End, Muswell Hill, and Highgate all contain significant conservation areas and streets subject to Article 4 directions, which restrict permitted development rights and require planning permission for work that would otherwise be exempt. Highgate in particular has one of the most carefully managed conservation areas in North London, with strict guidance on materials, fenestration, and alterations to front elevations.

Working within these constraints is not a barrier - it is a discipline that, when handled well, leads to better outcomes. A well-designed extension or loft conversion in a conservation area should enhance the building it belongs to, not simply add space. We have extensive experience navigating the planning process and working with local planning authorities to achieve the right result.

If your home falls within a conservation area or is covered by an Article 4 direction, an early conversation about what is and is not achievable can save significant time and cost further down the line.

The types of projects we work on

In Crouch End and the surrounding area, our work typically includes:

Rear and side extensions - adding space to the ground floor, often combining kitchen, dining, and living areas into a single, well-lit space that opens to the garden.

Loft conversions - creating additional bedrooms or workspace in the roof, with careful attention to light, headroom, and the relationship between new and existing.

Full refurbishments - rethinking the layout and interior of an existing home from top to bottom, often combined with an extension to maximise the potential of the whole building.

Interior design - working on the material palette, joinery, kitchens, and bathrooms as an integrated part of the architectural process, so that the building and its interior feel resolved together.

How we work

Every project begins with a conversation. We listen carefully to what you are hoping to achieve - not just the brief, but the way you want to live. From there, we carry out a focused feasibility study to test whether your ideas, your site, and your budget are genuinely aligned before any design begins.

We work in three dimensions from the very start, building a virtual model of your project so you can see and understand what is being proposed at every stage. This makes the process clearer, reduces the risk of surprises on site, and gives you confidence in every decision.

Our process runs from the initial conversation through to completion and post-occupancy - seven stages that are structured enough to provide clarity and flexible enough to respond to what your particular project needs. You can read more about how we work on our services page (https://www.pierremare.com/services).

Why choose a local architect

Working with an architect who is based in your neighbourhood has practical advantages. We understand the local planning context, the character of the housing stock, and the particular opportunities and constraints that come with building in this part of London. That understanding comes from over ten years of living and working here, not from a map or a planning document.

Pierre Maré Architects has been based in Crouch End since the early 2010s. This is where we live and work. The quality of the built environment here matters to us - not as an abstract concern, but as something we experience every day.
